Teacher recruitment, training and support
AYLA recruits volunteer teachers, pairs each with a trained moderator, and handles scheduling, agreements, attendance and materials so teachers can spend their time teaching.
How we support a volunteer teacher
- A moderator in every class who handles attendance, materials and student questions
- A signed teaching agreement so expectations are clear from day one
- A technical board on hand when a platform or connection fails mid-lesson
- Structured student feedback at the end of each round, shared back with the teacher
- A leadership board that handles recruitment, placement and scheduling
The alumnae pipeline
AYLA's moderators are largely former students. A girl who finished Basic English two rounds ago moderates the class today, and will teach it next year. That pipeline is deliberate: it keeps the programme running on Afghan leadership rather than on outside goodwill.

AYLA runs on volunteered hours and small, specific donations. Round 5 cost $5,100 and taught around 300 students — that is roughly $17 per girl, per round.
