Duolingo English Test
Free Duolingo English Test coupons
Why a test coupon changes everything
Almost every international university asks applicants to certify their English. For an Afghan student, the test fee alone can exceed a month of household income, and sitting an in-person exam may not be possible at all. The Duolingo English Test can be taken at home on a laptop — which makes a donated coupon one of the cheapest, highest-leverage things anyone can give an Afghan applicant.
Coupons are awarded through an open application process. AYLA reviews academic readiness, financial need and the concrete plan a student has for using the score, then allocates the coupons a round has available.
Results so far
- Round 1 — 10 candidates received coupons; 9 completed the test
- Round 2 — 9 students sat and passed with their allocated coupons
- Round 3 — 20 applicants passed, funded entirely by individual donors
- Round 4 — 4 applicants selected through the application process took the test
Alongside the Duolingo initiative, AYLA's German language teachers have offered to cover B1 and B2 examination fees for students in their classes who are working toward study in Germany and Austria.
Sponsor a test
Individual sponsors have funded whole rounds of this initiative. If you would like to cover coupons for the next cohort, or you work with a testing body that can donate them, get in touch — this is the request we are asked for most often by students and the one we can act on fastest.

One coupon. One month of data. One girl still in school.
AYLA runs on volunteered hours and small, specific donations. Round 5 cost $5,100 and taught around 300 students — that is roughly $17 per girl, per round.
